Important Information re Emergency Vehicles when Gates are Closed
THE AMBULANCE SERVICE
There seems to be a growing concern about what happens when it becomes necessary to call an ambulance in the middle of the night or at any time that our community gates are closed to public access. In the past year and a half I’ve been queried about four times to confirm there is a code in the interphone box for the Ambulance Service. The short answer to that question is “YES”, there is and always has been. The code was embedded in the system when the gates were first installed and the special utility code was established by Sandpiper Developments using Ambulance Service guidelines.
However, after four queries (each time, the database was reviewed to make sure the code was still there and then tested to ensure that it worked) one begins to wonder why crews didn’t seem to know the code which would allow them to access the community without conversing directly with the resident in trouble and adding to the confusion of the moment. So we called the Ambulance Service. They, in turn, sent one of their supervisors out to see us. We reviewed the system so that he knew exactly how it worked and then he returned to his office to do more checking of their system. When he got back to us his email contained these words: “I did confirm that the access code for your community is embedded in our data base and is (should be) shared with all Paramedic Crews that respond to your address.” We informed him that, as with all our utility codes, their special code must be preceded with a ‘#’ sign and we suggested that this be imbedded in their database. The supervisor feels that this parameter was not included in the original instruction received by their office when the code was established and therefore may be the reason for the failure of the gates to open. This situation has now been remedied.
Bearing the above in mind, you might think “Why not provide all the residents with the ambulance service code?” I think everyone can see where that would lead. I think it would likely take a month and then we could remove our gates as they would be rendered useless. Codes migrate. Codes are used for unintended purposes. That’s why this community has the policy of only providing codes to bonded service companies and why usage of those codes is reviewed on a regular basis for indications of misuse. But…any useful suggestion on how we could address the ambulance access problem would be appreciated.
When the supervisor was here he made some interesting comments. Did you know that all emergency ambulance calls in the province of BC, excluding the Island, are routed through Kamloops? He gave us a simplified version of how their system works but his emphasis was on the complexity of routing the information to the driver of the ambulance vehicle and the various ways things could go wrong. He said one of the ways we, as requesters of their services, could help was to have accurate and complete information to provide to the 911 operator. The attached sidebar and chart as provided by the Ambulance Service will assist you with this. The chart (one for each member of the household) can be completed ahead of time and kept handy for emergencies. Alternatively, If the paramedics call you on a cell phone tell them to press # before entering their own special code. Otherwise, if they have contacted you using the interphone , just press 9 in the usual manner to allow them access. Hopefully this will end the confusion.

Requesting Emergency Services can be a stressful situation. The following information is provided as a guide to assist you should you ever find it necessary to request assistance through 911.
Prior to Requesting 911 Assistance:
· Clearly print your address, telephone number and personal information (template attached) and post NEXT to your telephone. During an emergency it can be easy to forget things as simple as an address or telephone number. Often, visitors may be the one making the call and will not readily know the address. If the call originates from a cellular telephone there will be no display of the calling address as is normal when the call is placed from most residential landlines.
· Get in the habit of turning your front porch light on before retiring each night. This is a good safety tip to follow however in the event you need to call for emergency assistance through the night your address and house will already be illuminated for responding Crews.
When Requesting 911 Assistance:
· Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you to hang up. This will ensure that all the information necessary to direct responding Crews and assist you until their arrival is secured. Keep your telephone clear until Emergency Crews arrive in the unlikely event the emergency service needs to call you back to obtain additional information for responding Crews.
· Be prepared to answer a few questions about the person you are calling on behalf of:
o Is he / she conscious,
o Are they breathing,
o Do they have a pulse,
o Do they have any medical conditions: i.e. cardiac, asthma, diabetes, stroke…
· Have a list of medications, including dosages and frequencies, as well as pertinent medical history and allergies listed and readily available as noted above (template attached). Keep your Medical Card (MSP / Blue Cross, etc) handy. This will GREATLY assist Paramedics provide care for you.
· Know your Access Code and provide it to the Emergency Dispatcher.
· If possible, have someone meet the responding Crews to provide direction to the exact location they are needed.
